After slavery, sharecropping became the new system for poor people to “earn” a living. The landlord provided land, housing, tools, seed and sometimes a mule. The local merchants provided food and supplies on credit. Of course the “sharing” was never equal, by the time the credit was paid there was barely anything left for the sharecropper who worked the land.
