It is almost back to school time and I want to honor Elizabeth Eckford, one of the Little Rock Nine, study, oils on wood. It was 1957 when the school board approved, by court order, the attendance of nine “privileged” African Americans to attend an all white school beginning desegregation.  Elizabeth’s family didn’t have a telephone line so she missed the instructions to where to meet and she ended up alone, without protection.  She almost got lynched by the angry whites that opposed blacks in “their white school.” I wanted to capture that moment of courage and solitude after being chased off of the school steps and she sits to wait for the bus...... Thank you Elizabeth for that moment.
